We argue that doctoral education in water needs an elevated focus towards educating game changers who can drive innovation and change more sustainable futures across academic non-academic settings. Today's graduates are increasingly employed outside academia, challenged to understand complex interconnected systems, integrate synthesize information from different disciplines lead the way toward creative, resilient, robust, socially solutions. Supervisors by interdisciplinary research topics growing diversity of objectives, too often at cost their wellbeing. The need keep up with rapid scientific technological development floods big data is pressing. key insights higher literature programs identify priority actions targeted four actor groups: supervisors supervisees, group, university, industry. contribute appropriate resourcing, enabling environment for enhanced teamwork practices, systematic structures progress. Establishing supporting will leverage much-needed communities practice involved co-creating transforming supervision students research.
